As part of the CHEOPS campaign send your drawing into space thousands of children living in Switzerland or in another of the 22 ESA member states, have sent in drawings related to the theme of the Universe. Out of all drawings, 2748 were selected by lot, shrunk in size by a factor thousand and engraved on two titanium plaques at the Bern University of Applied Sciences in Burgdorf CH.
The art historian Anna Lehninger, who investigates children’s drawings as a cultural asset, has had a look at the pictures resulting from the CHEOPS-children’s drawing campaign: The Universe from a Child’s perspective
During summer 2018, the two plaques with the engraved children’s drawings have been mounted onto the CHEOPS satellite. On August, 27th 2108, while the entire satellite was in Switzerland for final tests, representatives of the institutions involved in its construction and media visited it at RUAG in Zurich. During this official event, Federal Councillor Johann Schneider-Ammann unveiled the two titanium plaques. He stated: «Switzerland is a space nation». He also referred to the need to promote young talent in the fields of mathematics, physics, computer science, natural sciences and technology.
On Dezember 18th, 2019 CHEOPS has been launched on a Soyuz rocket from the European launch site in Kourou (French Guiana). On this occasion, public events took place in Switzerland and other ESA member states. Looking back: CHEOPS launch postponed , CHEOPS successfully launched
